<title>BONHAMS SALE</title> 15th June

BONHAMS CLARICE CLIFF SALE 15th June 2006

Whereas, the last Bonhams sale only managed a collection of about 50 lots, the latest sale offered a more respectable 128 lots. Apparently, quite a few of those came from a European collection.

The Highlight of the sale was destined to be the Conical Early Morning set in Apples. A great shape with a great pattern. This was estimated at £1500 -£2500, but despite damage made £8275.

The sale opened with the Vases section and the highlights were a Globe (shape 370) in Cornwall (£2346) and a Finned vase in Blue chintz (£1235). Jugs followed and the rarest/nicest one in Pink Tree made £617. This was in the George shape. Not perhaps the most desirable of shapes, but I thought it was painted very well. Congratulations to the Australian collector, who had his heart set on this one. Of the Lotus jugs, the Blue Firs made £1235. A lowish price, but it did have a lot of oxidisation to the blue.

In the Bowls section, I did quite fancy the stepped bowl in Orange L. However, the two hairlines to the rim gave it a horrible sound. I left it to go at £395.

In the Teasets/Coffee sets, the Sharks Teeth made £1420. A rare set, but it had a lot of damage and I didn’t particularly like the colourway. A Rhodanthe Bonjour set made £1529. We then saw four lots of May Avenue. One of the Lots comprising a daffodil cup/saucer with matched plate, Milk and Sugar bowl, made £5434, despite a scratched plate and a large chip to the sugar. A Bonjour Coffee set in Delecia Pansies failed to sell, but it was in awful condition.

Notable results in the “Smalls” section were a Green Japan Conical Sifter for a very high £2346 (flying past an estimate of £3-500); and two Sabots in Luxor and Lightning which were cheap at £679 and £617 respectively.

Overall, a good sale with a very broad cross section of pieces, with something for everyone and all budgets. Well done Johanna!!!!!!!!!!!!
